Learning objectives (Specific)
-
Reverse engineer an app to identify the user needs that it
solves
-
Model user needs and unique value proposition using a lean
canvas
-
Sketch out user hypotheses you wish to validate in a prototype
design
-
Validate the user hypotheses by testing the design as a functional
prototype
Lectures
Lean methods related to UX user experience, reusable design
patterns and rapid prototyping.
Group work related to week 1 assignment A
Monday:
-
Reverse engineering: analyze Beats Music app to
identify user needs (define user segments, frequent usage
scenarios, usage patterns based on type of device, changing user
needs throughout the day, mechanisms used for
navigation,
sharing, liking)
- Lean canvas
: map out needs, existing alternatives, user
segments, unique value proposition and the solution provided by the
Beats Music app using a lean business model canvas
-
Prototyping: identify user needs for a music
streaming app that are not solved in existing solutions like e.g.
Spotify; define how you
could possibly validate these user needs in a functional
prototype using POP for iOS or android, sketch
out the app functionalities on paper as wireframes, import the
wireframes into a storyboard using POP, transform the storyboard
into a functional POP prototype with simple navigation
-
Presentation : demo 1st iteration of your POP
prototype and state what user needs it is meant to
validate
Thursday:
- Validation of user
needs : validate your user hypotheses by testing the
1st iteration of your POP prototype concept with members of the
other groups to collect and incorporate feedback for 2nd iteration
of your design
- Peer review: present
2nd iteration of your POP prototype app (max. 5 min per group)
- Iteration: incorporate
feedback and new ideas into the design and upload your prototype
before friday at 17.

Lecture 1 A - define user needs in relation to segments using a
lean business model canvas.Validate the identified user needs by
creating a functional prototype using tools like POP.
-
Lecture 2 A - gestalt principles; how our brains connect
objects into line and shapes as a basis for UX design
patterns.
-
Lecture 2 B - usage of the gestalt principles proximity,
similarity, continuity and closure in iOS apps
