This page contains information about the assignments and final
project in 02821.
Assignments 1, 2, & 3
Assignments 1, 2, and 3 will be written reports, summarizing the
work contained in exercises preceding it. If you show up to class
and solve the exercises, these assignments should be straight
forward to solve.
- Assignment 1 will be posted after lecture 3 and due one
week later (see details regarding Formalia
below)
- Assignment 2 will be posted after lecture 5 and due one week
later.
- Assignment 3 will be posted after lecture 8 and due one week
later.
Author contributions
- Since groups have size 4, we would like to know who did what.
There are two ways of doing this, please choose one of them!
- Contributions A [preferred]: Write a
separate section (which should appear on the first page), where you
explain the author contributions. This style is becoming more
common in actual scientific papers. Read more here: http://blogs.nature.com/nautilus/2007/11/post_12.html.
- Contributions B: After each numbered section, write
who wrote/performed the work.
Formalia regarding assignment 1-3
- Assignment 1, 2, and 3 will be
handed in in groups that we design for you (typically size 4,
sometimes).
- Assignment 1, 2,
and 3 suggested maximal length is
6 pages (if you can answer all questions
within less space, that's great). Depending on your disposition, It
might be difficult to squeze in all that material into 6 pages, but
that's part of the challenge. While grading, we look at how you
prioritize material and express yourself clearly and
succinctly.
- Read the text carefully - make sure you understand the
question. And make sure that you answer all sub-questions, etc.
(It's easy to miss something, so be thorough).
- The reports should be formatted according the standard ACM SIG
Proceedings Template (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates).
- In the ACM template, please allow one section per numbered
question.
- Check that figures display correctly and have a caption. Axes
must be labeled, etc.
- Make sure that you use references when they're needed and
follow academic standards.
- THE ASSIGNMENT MUST BE IN PDF
FORMAT. MS Word and OpenOffice are particularly
unpopular; handing in in non-pdf format will negatively influence
your grade.
- No code is necessary - if you're very proud of your code you
may attach your scripts as a zip file.
- Be precise, write in objective language (avoid: "I think ...",
"In my opinon...", etc) - if you make an observation, support it
with data.
Formalia regarding projects
- The projects will be carried out in groups of size 4.
Project Assignment A
The fourth assignment will be a 5 minute presentation to be
delivered to the class during lecture 10.
The talk should explain the central idea behind your final
project (what is it?, why is it interesting?), as well as an
outline on the elements you’ll need to get to your goal - and the
implementation plan.
- The talk will be 15 slides.
- We will auto-forward each slide after 20 seconds.
- Slides must be in pdf format. We will not accept slides in
PowerPoint or Keynote formats.
It is possible to include a lot of material into 5 minutes of
presentation, so you’ll need to put some effort into developing
your idea. We highly recommend practicing the talk before you show
up so you’re used to the autoforwarding, etc.
Project Assignment A*
As a new option this year, you will also be allowed to make
a 5 minute movie (instead of the 5 minute presentation).
The movie will be evaluated on how well it explains the central
idea behind your final project (what is it?, why is it
interesting?), as well as an outline on the elements you’ll need to
get to your goal - and the implementation plan. But other than
that, there are no constraints. And we do appreciate
funny/inventive/beautiful movies, although the academic content is
most important. Note that we'll display the movie to the entire
class.
Project Assignment B
More information on the main part of the final project will be
made available on a separate page. The final project is due on
May 13th, 23:59.
This page will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Are you sure?
