Social Data Modeling

Project Assignment B
Page last edited by Sune Lehmann Jørgensen (sljo) 01/04-2014

Overview

The deliverables for the Final project will be
  • A website/App. Using or displaying an analysis of a dataset. Use this opportunity to choose a dataset that interests you and use the theoretical & visualization tools from the class to understand it!
  • A two page report (see below).

The idea is that you can create much more complex, dynamic and interactive analysis (and visualizations) on line. So the app/website is a way for you to present your work in a way that everyone can understand it ... including dynamic visualizations, interactive analysis based on social data, etc, etc ... that would not work on a piece of paper. The app/website should be selv-contained and explain your work; a useful rule of thumb for the level of detail is that your mom should be able to understand the general idea.

The report tells us about your considerations in creating the page/app, as well as the technical aspects of the theory you used to analyze, understand, and visualize the data.

Website/App
This part of the assignment is quite free. It can be as simple as an oldfashioned static web-page, and as complicated as you want it to be. Let your creativity run wild (but keep in mind that this is not a coding class - we still care mostly about content and analysis). We will give you feedback on your vision as part of Project Assignment A. You do not need to attach any code. Simply deliver a link to the app + the report.

For hosting, we recommend using your DTU web-space or a free online service, such as Google App Engine or Heroku.

Again: getting your code to run remotely is not required (although nice) - the important thing is to show off your work, so a simple, static html page with visualizations & simple explanations is just fine.

Report
The report will be two pages, otherwise following the same format as assignments. It must contain four sections with the following headings & content
  • Motivation. What is your dataset? Why did you choose that one? What is your goal for the end user's experience?
  • Theory. Which theoretical tools did you use?
  • Implementation. How did you go about implementing your idea? Which practical tools did you use?
  • Discussion. Think critically about your creation: what is good?, what is bad?, why? Pay special attention to an analysis of aspects that did not go as expected, failed attempts, etc.

Exceptions

If you don't feel like you are up for setting up a website/web-app for the project, more conventional data-analysis based reports are also allowed. For these, we expect you to write approximately 2 pages per group participant. The report should contain the same headings as above plus one additional heading:

  • Findings. What did you learn from analyzing your dataset?

The report will be evaluated according to the same criteria as the app + report projects (explained below).

Evaluation

Here is what we care about:

  • Use of theory from class (in terms of coverage). How varied are the methods used? Did you use the several different methods from the class, or just one. You will not be expected to use every method we've covered, but one/two approaces will not be enough for a high grade. We will provide feedback on this issue as part of assignment 3.
  • Use of theory from class (in terms of quality). Is it clear from the report that you understand what you are doing?
  • Overall impression/execution. Does the site/app work as advertised? Is it clear that worked hard on creating a great project? Are the formalia in order? (And note that the focus is not on creating technically sophisticated sites/apps, but on how you can show interesting uses of the ideas and theory from the class.)
